A Peek Into First Grade
by Mrs. Deb Volberding
First grade has been a bunch of busy bees! We have been working hard on our reading, writing, and math skills. Students have been reading lots of decodable books, great stories from our reading books, and fantastic stories from the library. Our goal is to read at least 10 minutes every day. Many of the first graders are reading lots more than that! We even have one student who has already read 100 books this year, and a few more students are well on their way to making this optional goal by the end of first grade!
Currently, our class is working on retelling the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” or in our case “Jack and the Wolf” by acting it out in costumes. We are excited to record this activity in front of a green screen and then share with our parents in the near future.
We loved Grandparents Day and sharing our classroom with our loved ones. The firsties enjoyed showing off their money banks and making our number of the day three different ways with real coins.
One of our favorite times of the week is when Pastor Johnson comes in on Wednesdays. The kids get to ask him lots of great theological questions. We haven’t stumped him yet!
We are looking forward to going to Sidekick Theatre on Monday to see the fairy tale “Rose Red and Snow White.” We’re so excited to be able to go on field trips again!
So far first grade has been fabulous!
