I love the days when I get invited to see the creativity and enthusiasm of our teachers at work!
A few weeks ago, you may have caught the video on FB that highlighted the 4th graders working on a lesson about inference in my office where they had to solve the mystery of my disappearance. Last Friday, I got to spend an hour in the 4th grade classroom listening to their speculative stories about what happened to me. It was duly hilarious and comforting to know that they are very obviously my defenders! Mr. D., Ms. Cadie, and Mr. Peterman were named as probable culprits, and you should have heard the punishments our 4th graders devised for them. (I told them I should be writing down their suggestions as they might come in handy for a principal.) As an English teacher, I was also thrilled to see their writing skills and ability to fashion & deliver well-written, expressive stories.
From there, I traveled to the Kindergarten room where I was invited to join their sock hop. There was Mrs. Peterson dressed in clothes straight from the 50’s dancing amidst the kids with some pretty impressive moves! The students, full from the root beer floats provided by their teacher in the staged cafeteria “diner”, were moving about in poodle skirts and rolled sleeves. The preschool children walked past the K room, peeking inside with wide eyes while Miss Fuhrman explained that they’ll have their turn next year. This annual experience has been long-lasting in the K classroom — a good reminder of the value of tradition so that students can look forward to their turn at certain events!
Thank God for creative teachers who go the extra mile to make learning fun and exciting. We’ve got more to come in the preschool classroom with the Pilgrim Program and in 3rd grade with book reports! Stay tuned…
In joyful service,
Mrs. Dolan
